Hill work, plus injury edition.
Took Wifely and kids up Bradbury Mountain, about 20 minutes from our vacation house near Freeport. Stunning views, a .3 mile steep-assed summit trail and about 5-6 other ways to summit, some rocky and root-ish, some nice and broad. Perfect place for hill work. Run up for 600m, then down for 400m recovery. Then, sometimes switch it up and run down for the hill work, and up for the recovery. A little more than halfway finished with my 10x repeats and I decided to take a longer trail as I’m tiring mentally of the short summit ones and don’t want the picnic-ers at the summit to think I’m some sort of creeper. Head out on this beautiful rolling singletrack and bam-bim-boom, suddenly I’ve “oooofed” onto my stomach, catching myself with my hands, gashing the left one open and clocking my left kneecap on a big rock.
Adrenaline jumps me right back to my feet, but it’s obvious that my run is pretty much over. Keep in mind, this is exactly halfway into our vacay, during which I have probably the peak distance week planned, including a marathon distance training run. I begin the hobble-walk out of the woods, and I probably should have just turned around at this point, but I mistakenly thought I remembered the trail name and distance…
It probably took me about 40 painful minutes to walk out the 2-3 mile route that I took. Walking is fine, but going downhill or down stairs hurts under the kneecap pretty badly.
I spent the afternoon sleeping, icing, elevating and eating. Did I mention that our check engine light came on in the van? Did I also mention I accidentally got Sriracha in my eye as I shook the bottle, too?
Oh well, it’s vacation, and I’m still determined to enjoy, even without running. I feel much better this morning, so hopefully it won’t take me out of the game for long.
