2013 Running year in Review
I ran about 1250 miles this year, about 250 miles short of my goal of 1500. I had a couple of injuries, the major one being from a trail tumble in Maine in September. I met my goal of running my first Ultramarathons in 2013 (Mohican 50 miler in June and Forest Glen 50k in October).
I pretty much stopped posting actively to DailyMile (my Runmeter app posts there automatically) and Social Workout.com as I just wasn’t getting a lot out of either site. You’re my favorite, Tumblr.
I devoted a fair bit of time and energy to a strength training plan from RunnersConnect.com. It’s full of specific strength exercises to benefit your running. I think the plan was about $45 or so and it was one of the best things I bought this year.
I branched out on my road shoes this season and bought some Saucony Kinvara 4’s. This is the least minimal shoe in my arsenal and I like it a lot. I think I might need to find it’s trail cousin. I love my minimal shoes, but I also like variety. The Merrell Mix Master 2’s were probably my second most worn shoes this year.
I made peace with running on various surfaces this year. I used to shun asphalt in favor of the trail for nearly every run. Changing up my surface and speeds has made me a better, faster runner. I even ran my first road marathon (The Flying Pig in Cincinnati) and I loved it.
My cross-training got a boost when I picked up a couple more yoga classes later in the year. I now teach two cycling and three yoga classes every week. That goes up to four yoga classes this month. It’s nice to have those classes built into my week as “forced” cross-training. It’s helped me stay strong and avoid further injuries.
I finished up the year with a rockin’ Holiday running streak. I learned a lot, but still managed to gain a bit of weight. Screw you and your sugary temptations, holiday season…Oh well, I don’t run to eat. I run to breathe and maintain my sanity.
So, what races are on your schedule for 2014 runblrs? I think I have my trail races dialed in with the Dances with Dirt Gnawbone 50k in April and the Marquette (MI) 50k in August. I’d still like to run a marathon or two as well. I think I’ll try for the Flying Monkey lottery (in Nashville) for the fall.
